あまりにも当たり前のことなのだが，センサーが機能しない状態での自動運転とは，目隠しされた状態で運転しているのと同じなので，事故が発生しないで走行できるほうが不思議とでも言うべき状況下にあることになる。

センサーも機械装置の一種なので，その仕様の範囲内でしか機能しないし，装置の初期不良や劣化もある。センサーの不具合を自動的に監視するシステムにも初期不良や劣化がある。

そもそもハードウェアの設計に問題があり，劣化しやすい構造になっている場合もある。自衛隊の攻撃ヘリ墜落事件はそのような類型の事件の一種としてとらえ直すことが可能ではないかと思われる。これは自動車のブレーキ制御装置等にも一般的に見られる現象で，要するに，自動車走行によるストレスの蓄積の見積もりが甘すぎるために発生することが多い。製造物の欠陥の一種なのだが，自動車会社がそれを認めることはない。もし認めてしまうと，毎日のように大量のリコールをし続けなければならず，自動車製造事業そのものが成立しなくなってしまうからだ。

（余談）

現実の道路では違法行為に満ちている。というよりも，違法に運転していない自動車（例：速度や通行区分に関する規則・規制に一切反しないで走行している車両）は（警察の車両を含め）１台も存在しない。そもそも道路交通法の定めるとおりに運転すれば，重大な交通麻痺が発生し，社会生活が成立しなくなってしまう。だから，ありとあらゆる違法行為が存在するという前提で自動走行車両を設計・製造しなければならない。

私見では，軍隊用の重武装装甲車や重戦車のようなものでない限り，その実現は無理ではないかと思う。ちなみに，そのような車両だけになった場合，自車の優先走行を確保するために他の車両を砲撃して排除することになるだろうと思うので，やはり自己矛盾から逃れることはできない。このような論理上の単純な自己矛盾に気づかないところに現在の人工知能関連研究者の深刻な誤謬の根源が存在している。この点については，夏井高人「植物の名称の不公正な使用と景品表示法の適用」でも（脚注内で）簡単に触れているが，現在のところ，その指摘の重大性に気づいた者はなさそうだ。
